Kulturák 21

Visual identity and naming for a cultural centre in Bratislava. The brief was to build on the visual identity of Bratislava-Nové Mesto, the district that founded the centre, while giving Kulturák a distinct character of its own.

The original name, Stredisko kultúry Vajnorská 21 (Vajnorská 21 Cultural Centre), was replaced with the simpler, more familiar “Kulturák”—a colloquial Slovak term for a cultural centre. Many regular visitors already called the venue “kulturák”, making the new name a natural fit. To distinguish it from other cultural centres, we added “21”, linking the name to its address: Vajnorská 21.

At the heart of the identity is the Baste typeface, which combines sharp and rounded forms. This contrast carries through to the graphic system, where an outer frame with either sharp or rounded corners unifies the layouts. A single rounded, button-like shape provides the starting point for a wide range of image frames. It can be stretched, repeated, rotated and overlapped to create spaces for photography or illustration. Each application can combine different colours for the outer and inner frames, corner styles and image arrangements.

The identity retains several elements from Bratislava-Nové Mesto’s visual language: outlined buttons for dates and times, Grato Grotesk as a secondary typeface, and a related yet distinctive colour palette.
